Video Interview: Kinuyo Yamashita

In celebration of Japanese video game music composer Kinuyo Yamashita’s birthday, it is an honor to present to you this tribute to her music from Konami’s original Castlevania for the NES. In 1986, Yamashita composed music for Castlevania when she was only a teenager and had the challenge of working under strict hardware constraints. In addition, this also happened to be her debut work as composer on a video game. Her now iconic Castlevania compositions “Vampire killer” and “Wicked Child” would end up influencing all the later music of the series well as inspire multiple remixes over the years.

Tony Ness, the New York based chip musician best known for his uncensored lyrics, is never afraid to say what is on his mind.  A punk rocker at heart, Tony Ness combines chip music with vocals that are very raw, emotional and that pull no punches. His style and strength as a writer comes from the desire to turn past negative experiences into something more positive in the present. His latest album is called Gutter Trash Vol. 2 – El Dia Que el Mundo se Prendio Fuego (The Day the Earth Caught Fire) is the follow up to his EP “Gutter Trash.”

Kris Keyser is a passionate musician that is known for having the power to motivate and inspire others with his performances. Kris has a way of connecting with his audience in a way that is forever memorable to everyone present. Everyone I have ever spoken to regarding Blip Festival always mentions Keyser in conversation, even if they don’t know his name… “That guy at Blip that got everyone to yell at the same time!” or “That dude that jumped up high in the air while playing his music on the GameBoy!” are among the comments I have heard numerous times in multiple variations. In fact, it’s Kris’ performance at Blip 2012 that initially motivated me to get more involved in the chipscene this year through AlphaOmegaRadio.

Video Interview: Marjorie Becker

If you’ve come across a stunningly vibrant profile or cover photo of your favorite chip music artist on Facebook; It’s most likely the work of photographer Marjorie Becker. In October Marjorie sets out to Japan to cover Blip Festival Tokyo 2012, an event that is being called the “last hurrah” to the 6-year long Blip Festival series. Over the summer, the NY chip music community came together to help fund this project through Kickstarter out of both the love and the respect for Marjorie’s work over the years.
